Thermo Fisher Scientific microtome aids Parkinson’s research

20th July 2010

Thermo Fisher Scientific has highlighted the role its Finesse Microtome system has played in research conducted at the Parkinson’s UK and MS Society Tissue Bank.

The science company’s device has been implemented by the facility for the preparation of tissue samples for neuropathological examinations, replacing its older microtome.

Since installing the Finesse system, the tissue bank has been able to handle larger block sizes, allowing adjacent brain structures to be viewed in one section, meaning diagnosis has become faster and more reliable.

Moreover, Thermo Fisher Scientific’s unit has also proven easier to use, as well as allowing the facility to supply larger block tissue samples to researchers.

Giulio Cerroni, vice-president of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s anatomical pathology commercial operations in Europe, said: “At Thermo Fisher, we are working to provide instrumentation that will improve our customers’ workflows and make the day-to-day processes that they undertake easier.”

Earlier this week, Thermo Fisher Scientific completed a deal to acquire Fermentas International in a move which strengthens its position in the molecular and cellular biology sector.
