Thermo Fisher Scientific releases pseudoephedrine identification method

3rd February 2009

Thermo Fisher Scientific has released an application note detailing a UHPLC/MS method to identify and separate pseudoephedrine in illicit drug mixtures.

Methamphetamine and 3,4-MDMA, ephedrine and amphetamine can also be identified using the methodology detailed in the application note, titled Quantitative Analysis of Pseudoephedrine Tablets by UHPLC/MS.

The document – available to download for free – also includes the use of instrumentation in the identification and separation process, specifically the Accela UHPLC system and MSQ Plus single quadrupole mass spectrometer.

In a statement released by Thermo Fisher Scientific, pseudoephedrine is described as a List I chemical which "is highly coveted by drug traffickers who use it to manufacture methamphetamine (meth), a Schedule II controlled substance, for the illicit drug market".

Finding pseudoephedrine – frequently found in over-the-counter decongestant products – in illicit drugs can point to their sources and manufacturers.
