Thermo Fisher Scientific to purchase NMR innovator picoSpin
Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the acquisition of picoSpin, a deal that will expand the company's portfolio of spectroscopy solutions.
The Colorado-based technology firm is known as the creator of picoSpin-45, the world’s first miniature nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, which provides the functionality of a full-sized unit in a shoebox-sized design.
Ideally suited for academic, industrial and research applications, the device earned a 2012 R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine, winning recognition for its compact size, which is 70 times smaller than other products of its type.
By purchasing picoSpin, Thermo Fisher Scientific will be able to expand its array of analytical tools available to undergraduate and graduate chemistry laboratories, as well as analytical quality assurance and quality control laboratories in the pharmaceutical industry.
John Sos, vice-president and general manager for molecular spectroscopy at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said: “Adding picoSpin's unique product offerings to our existing capabilities in spectroscopy enables us to offer an even broader suite of chemical analysis."
This comes after the firm won a prize at HET Instrument 2012 in recognition of the innovative design of its Trace 1300 Series Gas Chromatography system.
