Third of UK adults never visit a dental hygienist, research finds

23rd March 2018

A significant proportion of UK adults have never visited a dental hygienist, meaning they are not necessarily doing enough to look after their dental health and oral hygiene.

Research carried out by Tepe UK and reported on by Dentistry.co.uk found that almost one-third of over-18s in Britain have never had a dental hygienist appointment, with 49 percent believing that regular visits to their dentist were enough to look after their teeth.

Some 36 percent of survey respondents said they thought dental hygienist appointments were simply too expensive, while 14 percent believed their oral hygiene to be excellent, meaning they did not need to visit a hygienist.

However, Elaine Tilling, head of clinical education at Tepe UK, pointed out that just brushing the teeth only cleans 60 percent of a tooth's surface.

She added: "These results show that, although people feel that their smile is very important to their image, a large proportion of UK adults are prioritising beauty treatments above oral care."
