Trade unions warn of 50,000 NHS job losses

24th February 2011

More than 50,000 NHS staff could be set to lose their jobs, a new campaign group has warned.

The False Economy website, which brings together online campaigners with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and other union representatives, claims that tens of thousands of posts will be scrapped, despite government promises to protect frontline staff.

Some trusts, such as the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, anticipate cutting one in five positions – a situation that the TUC says is certain to affect patient care.

The figures were collated using information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, press reports and trusts' annual plans.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Not only are they reorganising the NHS in a way that strips out many of its founding principles, but also insisting on immediate cuts that will certainly harm frontline services."

However, the government distanced itself from the figures and accused the unions of "scaremongering", stating that it is succeeding in reducing bureaucracy and redirecting funds towards patient care.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800425586-ADNFCR
