UK deaths from prostate cancer overtake breast cancer for first time

2nd February 2018

Prostate cancer has become the UK's third biggest killer after overtaking breast cancer for the first time ever.

New figures from Prostate Cancer UK have revealed that 11,819 men now die from prostate cancer every year in the UK, compared to 11,442 women dying from breast cancer. It means prostate cancer now ranks behind only lung and bowel cancer as the leading cause of death.

Since 1999, breast cancer deaths have been steadily decreasing, while prostate cancer deaths are still on the rise. According to the charity, this is because breast cancer is the subject of much more research and investment.

It was noted that men diagnosed with prostate cancer are now two-and-a-half times more likely to live for ten years or more than was the case in 1990, but the number of deaths is still rising due to an expanding and ageing population.

Prostate Cancer UK chief executive Angela Culhane said: "It's incredibly encouraging to see the tremendous progress that has been made in breast cancer over recent years. But with half the investment and half the research, it's not surprising that progress in prostate cancer is lagging behind."
