UK dental regulators pledge closer cooperation

3rd July 2017

The group of national bodies responsible for regulating the dental sector in the UK have pledged to continue working closely to enhance national care standards.

In a new review, the Regulation of Dental Services Programme Board (RDSPB) – which consists of the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Department of Health, General Dental Council (GDC) and NHS England – have called for a new sector-wide commitment to quality improvement.

To pursue this goal, the CQC and GDC have signed a new memorandum of understanding to refresh their joint commitment to closer working, improved data-sharing and reduced duplication.

A recent joint RDSPB statement on dental complaints was highlighted as a significant step forward, but further efforts of this kind will be needed to ensure a commitment to quality can be embedded across the wider dental sector, including providers, regulators and commissioners.

Matthew Hill, executive director of strategy at the GDC, said: "We think the board is making a real difference and has already delivered some innovative new ways of working, but there are still many opportunities for regulators to work with the dental team to get the best for patients."
