UK-EU medical research partnerships ‘have delivered increased value’
Partnerships between UK and EU medical researchers have delivered considerable value and should be protected post-Brexit, according to a new report.
Cancer Research UK has allied with a number of other medical organisations to highlight the ways in which Britain's contribution to research throughout the EU has fostered and strengthened scientific cooperation.
In rare diseases, the UK has become a world leader, conducting the highest number of trials. Given that the number of patients with rarer conditions is low in each country, recruiting enough participants for these trials is only possible with an international approach.
It was also shown that UK researchers account for 17 percent of the membership of the scientific advisory boards at Germany's Max Planck Institutes – the highest proportion from a single country – while the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency acted as scientific advice coordinator in at least one-fifth of centralised European Medicines Agency approvals between 2008 and 2016.
Sir Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK's chief executive, said: "By creating an environment that allows the best minds to work together, wherever they are, we will accelerate the life-saving discoveries that will help people across Europe."
