UK men ‘often unaware that prostate cancer risk is hereditary’

14th June 2017

A new study has raised concerns about the number of British men who do not know that their risk of prostate cancer is at least partly hereditary.

The Prostate Cancer UK research has indicated that half of all UK men do not realise that  their risk of developing the disease is two-and-a-half times higher if other members of their family have had it.

An accompanying study showed that only one in ten GPs are likely to always ask a man whether any close relatives have had the disease, suggesting that many men may not have a clear picture of their own disease risk as a result.

However, it was also shown that in cases where men took the lead and initiated discussions with their doctor, their experiences were overwhelmingly positive, suggesting more needs to be done to encourage people to have these kinds of conversation with their family and doctors.

Angela Culhane, chief executive of Prostate Cancer UK, said: "We need men to feel empowered to take control of their own health, find out their family history and proactively ask their GP whether they need tests for the disease due to their risk of developing it."
