UK National Screening Committee calls for new screening proposals

28th September 2016

The UK National Screening Committee has for the first time put out an annual call for proposals to be submitted for new conditions for national screening programmes.

Individuals or organisations will be able to submit a proposal for a condition to be considered for a population-wide screening programme, with all suggestions to be evaluated against the committee's existing screening criteria.

Any condition previously considered by the committee will not be included. Currently, there are 11 active population screening programmes in England, but the committee remains open to adding more.

This call for new screening topics is being piloted to assess its effectiveness and measure the volume of work that the process may generate. If successful, it is hoped it can continue on an annual basis.

The window for submissions for new topics opened on September 26th and will close at midnight on January 9th 2017.

Dr Anne Mackie, director of programmes for the UK National Screening Committee, said: "We have over 400 registered stakeholders and many other groups interested in our work, so it's only right that those keen to see a new screening programme for a health condition introduced in the UK should be able to submit a proposal."
