UK seasonal flu levels continue to rise

15th January 2018

Public Health England has called for people at risk of influenza to take the necessary precautions as the spread of the disease continues across the UK.

New official data has shown that seasonal flu levels have continued to increase in the last week, with a 78 percent increase in the GP consultation rate with flu-like illnesses, a 50 percent rise in flu hospitalisation rates, and a 65 percent increase in the intensive care admission rate for the disease.

As such, Public Health England has launched its new Catch It, Bin It, Kill It campaign, which will utilise radio, press and digital advertising to inform the public about the steps they can take to protect themselves and minimise the spread of the virus.

Letters are also being written to all frontline NHS workers to encourage them to take up the offer of flu vaccines if they have not already done so, as this is essential to stop the disease from being circulated in healthcare environments.

Professor Paul Cosford, medical director for Public Health England, said: "People suffering with flu-like symptoms should catch coughs or sneezes in tissues and bin them immediately, wash their hands regularly with soap and warm water and frequently clean regularly used surfaces to stop the spread of flu."
