UK & Thailand Partner on Genomic Sequencing Initiatives

25th January 2023

Thanks to a new agreement with Thailand, the UK will gain access to high level proficiencies in genome sequencing, research partnerships, academic and training prospects, and genomics data management.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister HE Anutin Charnvirakul and UK Health Minister Lord Nick Markham signed the Memorandum of Understanding last week.

The nations have pledged to collaborate on genome research, knowledge of uncommon/ undetected illnesses, and the development of greater educational and organisational ties.

The partnership will strengthen the UK’s knowledge in this area and solidify the position as a leading nation in the life sciences sector thanks to Thailand’s world-class genomics potential.

Genomic sequencing plays a huge part in comprehending how health results vary with different ethnicities, helping to address inequities, guaranteeing curable patients get adequate and fast treatment, and hastening the identification of cancer.

To improve the standard of living for health patients in the UK, £175 million was invested into genomics last month, with the NHS at the forefront of changes.

With this support, the NHS Genomic Medicine Service will continue its ground-breaking work while fostering innovation and advancing the healthcare system.

The agreement contributes to the 2021 Life Sciences Vision, pledging to produce top functional genomics, and enabling the UK to take the lead in this field.
