Unilever appoints Bayer boss as new chairman

26th February 2016

Unilever has announced the selection of leading European businessman Dr Marijn Dekkers as its new chairman.

Dr Dekkers is the current chief executive officer of Bayer, a role he will relinquish in April this year. He will be nominated for election to Unilever's boards at its annual general meeting during the same month.

The company's current chairman Michael Treschow will retire at this time, having served the usual maximum tenure of nine years. He joined the Unilever boards in 2007 and was the first independent non-executive chairman of the organisation.

Dr Dekkers has led Bayer since October 2010 and previously served as president and chief executive officer of Thermo Electron, now known as Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Ann Fudge, Unilever's vice-chairman and senior independent director, said: "Our nomination and corporate governance committee conducted a thorough search. We set the bar high and I'm delighted our efforts have yielded such an excellent result."

Additionally, it was confirmed that Hixonia Nyasulu will be retiring in April 2016, having also served for nine years. Strive Masiyiwa and Professor Youngme Moon will be appointed as non-executive directors at the same time.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801813559-ADNFCR
