Unilever launches ingredient transparency scheme for personal care products

Unilever has announced the launch of a new ingredient transparency initiative for its home and personal care brands.

Designed to provide consumers in the US and Europe with access to additional ingredient information, the aim is to go beyond basic labelling requirements by offering more in-depth guidance on several key metrics.

This includes disclosure of fragrance ingredients down to 0.01 percent of the product formulation, along with details of the scent the ingredients bring to the fragrance. The information will be available online for all Unilever products by 2018.

Additionally, further advice will be provided on the allergen content of its fragrances, as Unilever is keen to voluntarily bring its US packaging in line with the amount of allergy information that its European packaging offers to comply with local regulations.

Meanwhile, a What's in our Products section will be added to Unilever's websites, offering information on the company's approach to developing safe products, explanations of ingredient types and answers to common questions.

David Blanchard, Unilever's chief research and development officer, said: "We are committed to ensuring people have the information they need to choose the right product for them. So that is exactly what we are doing – going the extra mile beyond what is already on the label."
