Unilever outlines plans to tackle gender discrimination

20th March 2017

Unilever has released a report that highlights its commitment to tackling gender-based discrimination on both a corporate and societal level.

The Opportunities for Women report outlines the work Unilever is doing to support women in its workplace, its supply chain and customer development network, both through its brands and in broader society through partnerships and advocacy schemes.

It is working to meet a 2014 target of empowering five million women by 2020 by promoting rights and safety, building skills and capabilities, and generating economic opportunities through job creation.

Key principles that Unilever is following include ensuring it has the right information and disaggregated data in place to inform policies, taking steps to empower women's professional and personal development, and avoiding the perpetuation of harmful norms.

This work builds on Unilever's #Unstereotype project, launched last year to change the way the company portrays women and men in its advertising.

Alan Jope, Unilever's president for personal care, said: "Together with others, we want to be at the vanguard of challenging outdated stereotypes and help make gender equality a reality for our business and across wider society."
