Unity appointed by Facebook to handle UK launch of Oculus Rift

26th September 2016

Unity has been selected by Facebook to handle PR activities supporting the UK launch of the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

A report from PRWeek indicates that Unity has been appointed following a competitive pitch for a consumer-led brief, with the contract said to be worth around 500,000 pounds a year.

Described by Facebook chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg as "another big milestone towards the future of computing", the Oculus Rift is the flagship product from Oculus, the Kickstarter-backed startup company purchased by Facebook in 2014.

It allows users to experience films and videogames in an immersive VR environment and is being sold in the UK by John Lewis, Curry's PCWorld, GAME Digital, Harrods and Amazon for a recommended retail price of 549 pounds.

A series of demos of the technology are to be organised by retailers over the coming months to showcase the capabilities of the headset to the public. Its launch comes at a time when mainstream interest in VR is growing.

Other VR platforms that have debuted this year include the HTC Vive and Sony's PlayStation VR system.
