University of Pittsburgh announces fresh medical tech funding
The University of Pittsburgh's Center for Medical Innovation (CMI) has revealed the names of the recipients of its annual round of funding into innovative medical product research.
It has awarded $200,000 in grants to its researchers with the aim of enabling new engineering and medicine devices to be developed.
Known as the Pilot Funding Program for Early Stage Medical Technology Research and Development, the scheme has been running for six years.
Speaking to Next Pittsburgh, CMI executive director Dr. Alan Hirschman said: "These are the kinds of projects that promote tangible innovation."
He added: “We are translating known principles and known technologies into usable healthcare products that can improve lives."
Among the areas where the CMI hopes new medical engineering developments may provide improved care are respiratory diseases, hearing loss and eye injuries.
Dr Hirschmann noted that the newest innovation work includes a project exploring how aerosol sprays can deliver medicine to one specific organ without coming into contact with another.
