Virbac provides British vet with donations to support Dubrovnik volunteer work

15th August 2016

Virbac has provided a veterinary nurse from Hereford with products to support her volunteer work at the Dubrovnik Animal Shelter in Croatia.

Becky Bridges, who works at Brookfield Veterinary Practice, travelled to Dubrovnik in July, during which she helped at the shelter and delivered medicines donated by Virbac, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, parasiticides, ear cleaners and eye drops.

More than 360 dogs and 60 cats are cared for at the facility, which is located in the heart of a region that does not have a stable population. Many locals leave the city and rent their homes out during the summer, leaving their pets behind.

Cultural attitudes also mean that many are reluctant to provide homes to formerly abandoned animals, meaning the shelter has to work hard to keep the animals in its care healthy and off the streets.

Alys Webb, senior territory manager at Virbac Animal Health, said: "With the majority of pets in the UK … receive a high standard of veterinary care, it can be easy to forget that there are places even quite close to home where the attitude to animals is very different."
