Vitamin D supplements ‘can help reduce severe asthma attack risk’
Vitamin D supplements could potentially be helpful for asthma patients to reduce their risk of severe attacks, according to a study.
The Cochrane research body collated the findings of nine existing clinical trials, finding that taking vitamin D reduced the risk of severe asthma attacks requiring a hospital admission or a visit to accident and emergency from six percent to three percent when taken alongside asthma medication.
The rate of asthma attacks needing steroid treatment also dropped from 0.44 to 0.28 attacks per person per year, though vitamin D did not improve lung function or day-to-day asthma symptoms.
Although the results were encouraging, it was noted that further research is needed before any official advice can be given, as it is not clear whether this only helps patients who are vitamin D deficient.
Patients have been advised to consult a GP or pharmacist before taking any vitamin D supplements.
The study's lead author Professor Adrian Martineau told BBC News: "Going to see your GP is a key part of the message we want to give – I don't think it would be appropriate to just start taking vitamin D without knowing whether you have vitamin D deficiency or not."
