Wearable diabetes monitor ‘can assess health by analysing sweat’

A new type of wearable diabetes monitor has been developed that can provide users with important information by analysing compounds in their sweat.

Researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas have created a biosensor that can detect three interconnected compounds – cortisol, glucose and interleukin-6 – in perspired sweat for up to a week without loss of signal integrity.

It is able to achieve this through the use of room-temperature ionic liquid, a gel that helps to stabilise the microenvironment at the skin-cell surface to allow a week's worth of hourly readings to be taken without the performance degrading.

By measuring these three compounds, the device can track how the body is responding to dietary decisions, lifestyle activities and treatment, delivering real-time readings through an accompanying app at the touch of a button.

It is hoped that the device can be produced at roughly the same cost as current single-use glucose test strips.

Dr Shalini Prasad, professor of bioengineering at the University of Texas at Dallas school of engineering and computer science, said: "If we find the right partner, then within a 12-month window we hope to licence our technology and have our first products in the market."
