World’s largest sleep and cognition study launched
Researchers in Canada have launched what has been described as the world's largest sleep and cognition study.
The testing will be conducted entirely online to test different types of thinking, and assess the impact of sleep and sleep deprivation on the brain. The online nature of the study means it is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of participants.
Subjects will be asked to track their sleep over a three-day period while playing a set of scientifically valid tests of brain function. They will be able to check in after three days to see how their sleep values and performance compare with those of other volunteers.
The researchers will then analyse the sleep and cognition data, with the aim of sharing the results of the study six months after launch.
Adrian Owen, a Western University neuroscientist, said: "We have the opportunity in this study to learn far more about the brain's response to sleep than we have ever had before. And what we learn ultimately has the potential to change how millions of people go about their daily lives."
