Worst ever accident and emergency waiting times recorded in January

9th February 2017

Patients attending NHS accident and emergency departments during January 2017 faced record-breaking waiting times, according to a new report.

Figures leaked by BBC News has indicated that the number of people spending four hours or more waiting for treatment reached its highest ever level last month, with record numbers of people also waiting longer than 12 hours for a hospital bed once seen.

In total, 82 percent of patients were transferred, admitted or discharged within four hours of first arriving at accident and emergency – significantly below the NHS target of 95 percent.

The winter months routinely place greater-than-average demands on NHS care providers, but this new data indicates that January was the worst-performing month for the health service in the last 13 years.

Dr Mark Porter, chair of the British Medical Association council, said: "The government must urgently look at the long-term funding, capacity and recruitment issues facing the system as a whole if we are to get to grips with the pressures the NHS faces."
