Zimmer to expand manufacturing network

18th February 2008

Zimmer has announced plans to expand its global manufacturing network with the construction of a 100,000 sq ft plant.

Located in Shannon, Ireland, the plant will see $70-75 million (36-38 million pounds) of investment from the firm over the next two years, with manufacturing operations planned to start during 2008.

Initially, the plant will employ between 25 and 50 employees, with this figure forecast to reach around 250 in five years.

On opening, the factory will produce knee replacement implants, with other products potentially being added in future.

David Dvorak, president and chief executive officer of Zimmer Holdings, said: “We are delighted to be adding a new Ireland facility to our global network.

“We are constantly assessing our worldwide operations and logistics network to maximise efficiency and customer service and this project is a result of that process.”

He added that the company is grateful for the encouragement and help of both national and local officials in Shannon, while the company is looking forward to establishing a site that uses the skills of the available workforce to manufacture high-technology medical devices.

In November 2007, J Raymond Elliot retired as chairman of Zimmer Holdings and a member of its board of directors, with existing board member John L McGoldrick appointed as non-executive chairman in his place.
