Zoetis launches Sileo noise anxiety product for dogs
Zoetis has announced the launch of Sileo, an innovative veterinary approach to addressing the common problem of noise anxiety in dogs.
The novel oromucosal gel formulation contains the active ingredient dexmedetomidine hydrochloride and helps dogs to relax or remain calm yet fully functional in situations involving fear-eliciting sounds.
Once prescribed, it can be given by the dog owner and used only when needed, with its quick onset of action allowing it to take effect within 15 to 60 minutes of administration, lasting for two to three hours.
It is estimated that up to half of all dogs react fearfully to sound, making noise anxiety a common behavioural concern for dog owners. This issue often reaches a peak around the firework season.
The problem can often interact with broader anxiety disorders such as separation anxiety, meaning early intervention to prevent the fear of loud noises can have a wider positive effect on the animal's quality of life.
Animal behaviourist Jon Bowen said: "Sileo is ideal as an acute anxiolytic for planned or expected events such as fireworks or thunder, but it has an even wider range of potential applications in planned events that involve stressful noise exposure."
