Bluetongue Vaccine Expanded Amid Rising Outbreak in UK

25th September 2024

In response to a rising BTV-3 strain bluetongue outbreak in England, two more counties have been labelled ‘high-risk’, significantly boosting vaccine and testing availability. Suppliers such as Boehringer Ingelheim, Bioveta, and Virbac respond promptly to protect livestock and industry livelihoods.

The increased vaccine and testing accessibility are crucial against the BTV-3 strain, especially as the number of affected premises reaches 82 since the outbreak began in late August. Newly high-risk counties Yorkshire and Lincolnshire join Norfolk, Suffolk, and Kent. This designation allows free testing and easier vaccine access for farmers, potentially reducing significant livestock loss and economic impact.

Three vaccines were recently permitted for emergency use under DEFRA’s licence. Despite surveys showing less than 25% of farmers intending to vaccinate, interest has surged in affected regions. Green Counties Vets, experiencing increased client interest, supports the availability of effective vaccines as a critical combat tool.

As bluetongue cases rise, the swift action from vaccine suppliers like Boehringer Ingelheim with Bultavo 3, and upcoming options from Virbac and Ceva Animal Health, offers hope. These measures aim to curb the outbreak, shielding livestock and sustaining the agricultural industry’s vitality across affected UK regions.
