BVA Advocates for EU-UK Veterinary Medicine Deal Amidst Northern Ireland Concerns
The British Veterinary Association president, Elizabeth Mullineaux, has underscored the urgency of establishing a new EU-UK agreement to secure veterinary medicine supplies for Northern Ireland. This crucial move could impact not only Northern Ireland but extend to the Republic of Ireland and across Europe, emphasizing the significance of the deal for both animal and human health.
During an annual dinner at Stormont, Dr. Mullineaux articulated the looming threat posed by the upcoming expiration of the current temporary arrangements at the year’s end. These were extended in 2022 to prevent disruption in veterinary medicine supplies. Without a new accord, a significant number of veterinary products could face supply issues, heightening risks to both animal and public health. Mullineaux commended former BVA president Malcolm Morley for his efforts and pointed out that the UK Government’s latest manifesto commitment to establish a veterinary agreement with the EU offers a chance to ensure continuous supply. Meanwhile, DAERA Minister Andrew Muir noted that the resolution of this “shared challenge” aligns with broader welfare goals, including illegal activities affecting animal welfare.
Dr. Mullineaux’s rallying call emphasizes the broader implications of veterinary medicine access, underpinning efforts to enhance cooperation for health security across Europe. In tribute to the late Des Thompson, her speech concluded on a note of appreciation for his advocacy, encouraging united action to prioritize veterinary legislative progress.
