Compassion in World Farming Survey Reveals UK Consumers Demand Better Meat and Dairy Labels

20th September 2024

A recent UK-wide survey, commissioned by Compassion in World Farming, has revealed that many consumers favour mandatory labelling on meat and dairy products to indicate the conditions in which the animals were raised. With 66% of respondents supporting this move and only 6% opposing it.

The survey asked over 2,000 participants whether they supported the introduction of mandatory method of production labelling on meat and dairy products sold in shops. The overwhelming majority desired clearer information, similar to the existing labels for eggs, which have shifted consumer preferences towards higher welfare options.

Compassion in World Farming, the charity behind the survey, argues that such labelling does not only empower consumers but also promotes higher animal welfare standards across the industry. Such transparency could drive a shift in consumer habits, discouraging the purchase of lower welfare imports and supporting British farmers committed to better practices. This call for change aligns with the ongoing consultation launched by Defra in March, which proposed mandatory method of production labelling for meat products. However, the proposal has met resistance from the pig farming sector, voicing concerns over added costs and unnecessary complexity.

The push for mandatory labelling on meat and dairy products reflects a growing demand for transparency and animal welfare in food production. With the public overwhelmingly in favour, the pressure is now on Defra to respond to these calls and consider the potential benefits for consumers and ethical farming practices alike. This move could mark a significant step towards more informed food choices and higher welfare standards in the UK.
