Cresilon’s Bloodstopping Gel Earns Green Light from FDA
A hydrogel applicator that may be rapidly applied to help stop severe, life-threatening bleeding in a matter of moments has received approval from the FDA.
The plant-based Traumagel from Cresilon is injected directly into the area of injury using a pre-filled syringe, where it quickly adheres to the tissue to create a rigid barrier that momentarily halts blood flow without the need for further pressure like gauze or other bandages.
This categorises the appliance as a medical device under FDA rules, rather than a biologic-based coagulant which could induce the formation of solid clots in the body.
The New York-based startup now wants to increase the use of Traumagel as an emergency blood stopper for bullet wounds as well as other severe wounds in the military, in medical services, and beyond.
Cresilon co-founder and CEO Joe Landolina stated: “The ability to rapidly stop bleeding at the point of care and halt a life-threatening hemorrhage can be the difference between life and death for people with traumatic injuries.”
