Defra Approves Use of Vaccines to Combat Bluetongue Outbreak in England
On September 4, 2024, Defra announced the approval of three vaccines to address the bluetongue outbreak currently affecting eastern England. The vaccines, Bluevac-3, Bultavo-3, and Syvazul BTV3, have been granted usage permits for the BTV-3 virus strain, though they are not authorized for general use and come with specific licensing conditions.
The decision follows an escalation in the outbreak, with 15 premises in Norfolk and Suffolk now reporting cases. A total of 41 animals have been confirmed as infected. The newly available vaccines are classified as suppressive rather than preventive, meaning they do not prevent infection or transmission but may lessen the severity of symptoms.
Defra’s update on the situation explains that the vaccines will be distributed under either geographically targeted general licences, focusing initially on high-risk areas, or specific licences that can be obtained through the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). These licences will be issued based on a risk assessment process. Despite the introduction of these vaccines, existing movement controls and trade restrictions will remain in effect for vaccinated animals.
Farmers interested in using these vaccines are encouraged to consult with their private veterinarians for guidance. This intervention aims to manage the current outbreak while acknowledging the limitations of the vaccines in preventing disease spread.
