Defra’s New bTB Strategy Sparks Debate Amid Badger Cull Controversy
The UK Government’s fresh initiative to tackle bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in England has stirred significant debate. Defra’s proposal to end badger culling by the end of the current Parliament and enhance disease surveillance has led to protests in London, driven by campaigners demanding an immediate halt. Meanwhile, farmers and veterinary groups stress the importance of culling within the broader strategy to eradicate bTB by 2038.
The new plan, marks a pivotal moment in the fight against bTB, particularly given the declining infection rates. UK Chief Veterinary Officer emphasized that collaboration among Government, scientists, vets, and farmers is essential. Key elements of the strategy include badger population surveys, new surveillance for the remaining badger population, the formation of a Badger Vaccinator Field Force, and accelerated efforts for a cattle vaccine.
Despite efforts for collaborative development, the strategy has faced resistance. The British Cattle Veterinary Association noted the need for policy updates but expressed disappointment over the decision to phase out culling. NFU President echoed these concerns, highlighting the culling program’s historical success.
While the Government aims to balance perspectives, the Badger Trust and other conservation groups remain steadfast in their opposition, labelling further culling as inhumane. The Born Free Foundation pointed to Wales as an example of successful cattle-focused interventions, urging for alternative measures. The unfolding developments signal busy times ahead for those seeking roles in veterinary science and wildlife conservation.
