FDA Gives Approval for Glucose Monitor Made by Abbott
The FDA gave Abbott permission to market a glucose monitor that does not require a prescription.
The Lingo gadget made its first appearance in the UK last year as a glucose spike sensor for non-diabetic individuals. Abbott hasn’t disclosed many information about its intentions, although it aims to introduce it to the US.
Abbott and Dexcom will be in competition for the latest class of over-the-counter glucose monitors after the FDA’s new certification. In March, the FDA approved Dexcom to market its initial without a prescription CGM.
BTIG analyst Marie Thibault stated: “We have not confirmed this with [Abbott] but the company had expected clearance this year and was planning to launch the system under a direct-to-consumer, cash-pay model that does not require a prescription,” wrote Thibault.
