GSK and Oxford Join Forces for Cancer Vaccine Research

30th January 2025

GSK plc and the University of Oxford have announced a groundbreaking partnership to explore the potential of cancer prevention through vaccines. This collaboration, supported by a significant investment of up to £50 million over three years, aims to leverage complementary expertise in immunology, vaccine development, and cancer biology to uncover new approaches to cancer prevention.

As part of this new initiative, the GSK-Oxford Cancer Immuno-Prevention Programme will conduct translational research to delve into precancer biology. Oxford University’s renowned research in identifying and sequencing neoantigens, which are tumour-specific proteins that trigger immune responses against cancer, will be instrumental. This research could lead to innovations in cancer vaccines or targeted therapies aimed at preventing precancerous cells from evolving into full-blown cancer. Tony Wood, GSK’s Chief Scientific Officer, emphasised the strength of this partnership, building on previous collaborations, such as the Institute of Molecular and Computational Medicine established in 2021. The alliance underscores a continued effort to harness the immune system’s potential in combating cancer.

This collaboration between GSK and Oxford University represents a significant stride in cancer research, with the potential to revolutionise prevention strategies. By combining their expertise, both institutions hope to pave the way for future breakthroughs in cancer vaccines, offering new hope for patients worldwide. This initiative not only enhances the UK’s standing in life sciences but also promises to boost economic growth, aligning with national goals to advance scientific innovation.
