ICU Medical Shuts Down Facility in Minnesota

24th July 2024

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter states that ICU Medical is getting ready to shut down its operations and distribution location in Oakdale, Minnesota, and fire all 83 employees.

Ever after purchasing Smiths Medical from the London-based Smiths Group in 2022, the manufacturer of infusion pumps has placed a high priority on cost-cutting measures, such as the consolidation of its production and service facilities.

The anticipated closure of ICU’s facility is the most recent in a string of layoffs in the medical technology sector that have severely impacted the business during the last two years. Since the beginning of 2023, over 14,000 workers in the industry have lost their employment due to restructurings.

Duplicative pump service centres and other facilities throughout the world have been eliminated as part of ICU’s efforts to stabilise operations and prepare the merged business for development. From 20 sites in 2022, it intends to slash its number of production sites in half, leaving 10 plants by 2026.
