Moredun Scientific and Partners Unveil Game-Changing Vaccine for Streptococcus suis
A new vaccine targeting Streptococcus suis—a severe bacterial infection impacting UK pigs—is anticipated to be a ‘game-changer’ for the industry. Created through a collaboration among Moredun Scientific, the Vaccine Group, the University of Plymouth, and the University of Cambridge, this vaccine could drastically reduce the need for antibiotics, enhancing both pig health and public safety.
Streptococcus suis presents major challenges to the UK pig industry and public health. With no current vaccines covering all strains, farmers have been heavily dependent on antibiotics. As the UK government targets a 50% reduction in antibiotic use in livestock by 2030, the urgency for an effective vaccine is evident.
The innovative vaccine uses a harmless virus to trigger an immune response in animals. Initial trials, supported by a £1 million grant from Defra’s Farming Innovation Programme and managed by Innovate UK, aim to evaluate the vaccine’s effectiveness against multiple strains of the disease. This initiative not only addresses a significant animal health issue but also combats antimicrobial resistance.
For UK pig farmers, this vaccine represents a breakthrough. Dr. Jeremy Salt, CEO of the Vaccine Group, highlights that the goal is to protect both farmers and pigs from this disease. By tackling the infection at its source, this advancement promises to enhance public health, improve animal welfare, and support the livelihoods of those in the pig farming sector.
