New AI Device for Identifying Respiratory Diseases in Pigs
Boehringer Ingelheim has introduced SoundTalks, an artificial intelligence gadget that monitors and evaluates the rate and force of pigs’ coughs, enabling the early identification of respiratory conditions.
Every SoundTalks gadget features a microphone with a 10-meter field of observation.
According to the manufacturer, the gadget, which always tracks coughing, has already demonstrated the ability to identify respiratory diseases in pigs up to five days earlier than traditional techniques. This means that farmers and veterinarians can react more quickly, enhancing health outcomes and lowering the risk of infection throughout the herd.
Paul Thompson from Garth Pig Practice stated: “The earlier we can detect the onset of disease the quicker we can intervene.’’
“By taking action earlier we can aim to reduce morbidity and mortality, and potentially lessen treatments including antibiotic use.’’
“This will help improve the wellbeing of the pigs and reduce the time commitments and costs for the farmer.’’
