Post-Brexit Veterinary Hurdles Hit UK Meat Industry
Since Brexit, the UK’s meat industry has faced significant financial challenges due to inconsistent veterinary controls, costing millions annually. The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) has urgently called for the government to negotiate a new veterinary agreement with the EU to alleviate these issues.
The UK’s departure from the European Union has resulted in variable application of veterinary controls at Border Control Posts, causing significant financial losses and operational inefficiencies for the meat industry. The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers, the country’s largest meat and poultry trade body, highlights that these inconsistencies and outdated certification processes are jeopardizing the industry’s stability. Incorrect veterinary decisions and inaccurate export health certificates have led to shipment delays, product spoilage, and wasted resources.
Veterinary inconsistencies not only impose added complexity but also bring financial risks and operational issues for exporters. Each export load incurs substantial costs, amounting up to £1,500 in paperwork alone, while importers face up to £870 per truck in customs fees, with only a small fraction of consignments undergoing inspection.
Jason Aldiss, head of external affairs at AIMS, calls on the UK government to urgently negotiate a new veterinary agreement with the EU. Standardizing veterinary controls and removing the need for EHCs could mitigate economic losses and restore pre-Brexit sector efficiency. Immediate action is essential to prevent further damage and stabilize the UK’s meat industry.
