Procept BioRobotics Launches Landmark Study on Aquablation for Prostate Cancer

8th October 2024

The San Jose, California-based company Procept BioRobotics has started the WATER IV PCa trial, which compares Aquablation therapy to radical prostatectomy as a treatment for localized prostate cancer. With a 10-year follow-up period, the trial, which will be conducted across 50 centers, aims to enroll up to 280 men with localized prostate cancer in Grade Groups 1 to 3. Prostate cancer treatment strategies could be revolutionized by this research, potentially affecting millions of men globally.

With the use of real-time ultrasound imaging, aquablation therapy—a robotic, image-guided, heat-free procedure—offers surgeons a multidimensional view of the prostate, enabling customized treatment regimens. Aquablation presents itself as a potentially safer and more effective option to radical prostatectomy, which could improve patient outcomes in terms of quality of life and safety. Prominent urologist Dr. Inderbir Gill speculates that this approach may drastically change the way that treatments are currently administered. With CEO Reza Zadno highlighting the novelty of providing an energy-based treatment that directly competes with radical prostatectomy, Procept BioRobotics highlighted this trial as an important step in pursuing an indication specific to prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer treatment innovation is at a crossroads with the start of Procept BioRobotics’ WATER IV PCa trial. The trial’s use of Aquablation therapy to challenge conventional methods may improve patient outcomes while minimizing treatment-related harm. As the research progresses, it has the potential to completely rewrite the rules regarding standard care for patients with localized prostate cancer, ultimately providing more individualized and minimally invasive treatment options.
