Rising NHS Dental Charges Cause Public Concern

26th March 2025

The recent hike in NHS dental charges has sparked significant concern among patients, with over 40,000 people signing a Mirror petition demanding action. From next Tuesday, dental cheque-up fees will rise from £23.80 to £27.40, reflecting a near two-thirds increase since 2010. The British Dental Association (BDA) argues that stagnating government funds have led to these higher charges, impacting millions of families across England.

The NHS dental budget has remained fixed at £3 billion, according to the BDA, which has expressed concerns about the lack of adjustments for inflation, resulting in an effective cut of £1 billion in real terms. The current funding only supports dental care for half the population, leading to increased costs for patients as a means of offsetting limited government contributions. Shiv Pabary, chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practise Committee, pointed out that had government funding matched the rate of charge increases, there would be an additional £1.5 billion available for NHS dentistry. With Band 3 treatments like dentures or crowns climbing to £326.70, patient concerns about affordability and accessibility are growing.

The surge in NHS dental fees highlights ongoing issues in securing appropriate funding for public dental health. As public dissatisfaction mounts, the BDA criticises the Treasury’s approach, suggesting these fee hikes are a form of stealth cuts. Ensuring that dental care remains accessible and affordable calls for urgent governmental intervention to sustain the future of NHS dentistry services.
