RSPCA Assured Under Review After Brian May Quits
RSPCA Assured has announced a review following the resignation of Queen guitarist Sir Brian May from his role as vice-president. This development comes amidst allegations of poor animal welfare standards, voiced by activists who filmed conditions on nearly 50 farms.
The RSPCA swiftly initiated an ‘immediate’ investigation, visiting all farms highlighted by activists for allegedly breaching legal standards. Sir Brian May’s departure stems from what he described as ‘damning evidence’ captured during secret filming. RSPCA president, Chris Packham, has further called for the assurance scheme to be suspended.
RSPCA Assured, a three-decade-old scheme, was created to enforce welfare standards surpassing UK legal requirements for meat, fish, eggs, and dairy farms. An RSPCA spokesperson emphasized the organization’s commitment to improving farmed animal lives through heightened legislation and farming practices. The charity seeks to instill confidence in the public that RSPCA Assured consistently delivers superior welfare compared to standard farming.
Besides the immediate investigation, the RSPCA has launched an independent review over several months involving unannounced visits to 200 scheme members. This review complements the scheme’s existing checks and aims to ensure robust enforcement of welfare standards.
The RSPCA’s initiative to re-evaluate its assurance scheme underscores its dedication to animal welfare. As the investigation progresses, the charity aims to address concerns and reaffirm public trust in RSPCA Assured. The comprehensive review reflects a proactive approach to maintaining and elevating welfare standards in the farming industry.
