UK Launches Groundbreaking Network for Sustainable Chemicals Transition

12th December 2024

The UK has launched the BB-REG-NET, a pioneering regulatory science network focused on bio-based and biodegradable materials, marking a significant shift towards sustainability in the chemicals sector. With over £0.47 million in funding from Innovate UK, the collaboration brings together industry experts, academia, and government officials to address barriers to adopting sustainable practices.

The BB-REG-NET is designed to accelerate the move towards sustainable chemical solutions, responding to global environmental concerns by reducing reliance on fossil-derived chemicals, which contribute to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. UK chemical industries are hoping to source up to 30% of carbon feedstock from biomass by 2050, an ambitious target which could generate £204 billion annually. Dr. Jen Vanderhoven of the Bio-Based and Biodegradable Industries Association leads this initiative, emphasising the importance of developing robust tools and standards for assessing bio-based and biodegradable materials. Stakeholders, including Clare Walker from Holiferm, commend the network for paving a clearer regulatory pathway, enhancing market adoption of sustainable materials.

With working groups set to commence their efforts in December 2024, the BB-REG-NET represents a collaborative and transformative step towards a circular bioeconomy. By fostering innovation and creating transparent regulatory frameworks, the network seeks to reduce the UK’s dependence on fossil resources and usher in a new era of environmentally conscious chemical manufacturing.
