Pharmacy Closures Increased by nearly 50% in 2024
The NPA has conducted an updated study of NHS data and estimated that there would be almost fifty percent more store closures in 2024. The NPA’s data shows that between January and April 2024, 177 stores shut down, a decrease from 116 over a similar timeframe in 2023. This means that, on a typical basis, 10 neighbourhood pharmacies ceased operations every week this year.
Chief Executive from Community Pharmacy England stated:
“Many pharmacy businesses are on the brink of collapse, and the NPA’s analysis is just further evidence confirming that stark reality. Years of financial and operational pressures are continuing to take their toll as the Government and NHS financial squeeze on the sector is now pushing all community pharmacies to the edge.“
“Pharmacies up and down the country are being forced to take drastic action, such as closing temporarily, cutting opening hours, reviewing their estates, and, if they can, closing branches. The message to Government and the NHS remains clear: if you do not reverse this policy, and fast, the impact will be catastrophic, and vital healthcare services will become ever more chaotic, with medicines supply at great risk.“
“Whilst the £645m recovery plan funding was very much needed, we have been clear that this is not enough to reverse all of the pressures on community pharmacies and that increased and sustained Government and NHS support and investment are also desperately needed. The viability of pharmacy businesses remains our critical concern in funding discussions with policymakers.’’
