TST Treatment Beneficial To Ewes and Farmers
Recent studies have shown that treating roundworm in sheep with parasite worms specifically works more effectively than blanket treatment.
Roundworms are thought to be among the main risks to sheep welfare and production worldwide, and they also cause significant financial losses.
In order to find out what strategies are currently being utilised to reduce infections, particularly in ewes, 383 sheep producers around Britain were questioned.
Subsequent research was carried out to assess the impact of applying targeted selected treatments (TST) throughout pre-tupping and lambing periods, in comparison to blanket treatments.
“Blanket treatment of all ewes can be avoided on sheep farms through the application of a TST strategy,” stated Dr. Eiry Williams, the PhD researcher.
“Application of TST will lead to a reduction in anthelmintic use, likely leading to a decrease in rate of anthelmintic resistance development, along with maintaining productivity and enhancing economic outputs in the long term.”
