Johnson & Johnson MedTech has unveiled promising one-year data from the DISRUPT BTK II study at the Vascular InterVentional Advances (VIVA) 2025 conference in Las Vegas. The study validates the continued effectiveness and safety of the Shockwave Peripheral Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) System in treating complex below-the-knee (BTK) calcified lesions in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), particularly those suffering from chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI).

The study highlights the Shockwave IVL System’s pivotal role in managing challenging BTK lesions, offering significant clinical advantages. With an impressive 94.8% of patients avoiding major amputation and 84.5% remaining free from revascularization after a year, the system demonstrates its efficacy in improving patient outcomes. The study also recorded durable vessel patency in 67.1% of patients, with significant symptom relief and quality of life improvements. These outcomes underscore IVL’s potential as a first-line strategy against calcification, particularly in a high-risk patient demographic.

The DISRUPT BTK II results position Johnson & Johnson’s Shockwave IVL System as a transformative tool in vascular care, enhancing patient mobility and reducing amputation rates in those with severe PAD. By proving the utility of IVL in such complex cases, this breakthrough sets a new standard for minimally invasive vascular intervention, promising lasting benefits for patients and potential new directions in the life sciences employment market.
