Siemens, Philips Win ARPA-H Funds for Stroke Robotics
The US Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has awarded up to $175.3 million in five-year funding to Siemens Healthineers, Philips North America, MIT spinout Magnendo and the University of California, San Diego, to develop autonomous endovascular robotics for stroke treatment. Announced on 21 August 2026, the funding channels through the AIR (Autonomous Interventions and Robotics) programme and aims to bring faster mechanical thrombectomy to more stroke patients.
Siemens Healthineers will receive up to $31.1 million to develop an autonomous remote endovascular robot capable of performing long-distance mechanical thrombectomy without direct human input, with an additional $5.4 million own investment bringing total commitment to $36.5 million. Philips North America is receiving up to $33.7 million for an autonomous mechanical thrombectomy and neurointerventional robot. Magnendo, an MIT spinout, will receive up to $32 million to advance a magnetic robotic navigation platform. Stryker, which established a strategic partnership with Siemens Healthineers last year to develop robotic neurovascular interventions, is participating as a subrecipient.
The programme targets a clear clinical gap: more than half of the US population lives more than an hour from a stroke centre capable of performing thrombectomy, and only 12% of eligible patients receive the treatment. Philipp Fischer, head of advanced therapies at Siemens Healthineers, positioned the programme as combining robotics, imaging, devices and AI to transform how endovascular therapy is delivered across a broader range of care settings. The funding lands as substantial validation for the autonomous stroke robotics category and directly complements the €30m growth debt raised by French AI-medtech Carvolix earlier this month.
The commercial signal is a rapidly maturing autonomous neurovascular robotics category attracting substantial federal and private investment. Autonomous remote thrombectomy would fundamentally reshape stroke care access economics. Expect Stryker, Medtronic, Penumbra and Cerenovus (J&J) to sharpen their positioning in neurovascular robotics through 2027 as ARPA-H-funded and private-sector programmes converge on autonomous stroke treatment.
