Affordable Pet Labs Trials Needle-Free At-Home Heartworm Test

4th November 2026

US direct-to-consumer veterinary lab Affordable Pet Labs (APL) has launched a nationwide validation study of its patent-pending needle-free at-home heartworm test, targeting more than 1,500 dogs across its 52-city network. Announced on 26 October 2026 and reported on 28 October, the study pairs each enrolled dog’s standard heartworm blood test with a new non-blood sample, with the ambition of launching a nationwide at-home testing kit if validation thresholds are met.

Each study dog receives a standard heartworm blood test covering antigen and microfilariae during an APL technician home visit, at no cost to the owner. A second non-blood sample is collected during the same visit for the new method, with both samples analysed at APL’s lab and compared for each dog. Independent researchers set the acceptance thresholds and review results. Standard blood results go to owners and veterinarians within two to three business days and remain the official record; results from the new method are withheld until the study ends, and no prevention or treatment decisions are based on them. Eligibility covers dogs aged seven months and above in the 52 served cities, excluding dogs recently treated with melarsomine or doxycycline or with active urinary issues. Rescue groups and shelters are invited to enrol dogs. Co-founder Dr Joseph Menicucci is leading industry engagement under confidentiality agreements.

APL currently employs 124 technicians across its 52-city network, having added 16 cities over the past 12 months. If the validation study succeeds, the company plans a nationwide at-home needle-free test launch through kit and technician channels, with owners able to share annual results with their veterinarian and prevention prescriptions issued either by a veterinarian or via state-approved telehealth. Most US states require a negative annual heartworm test before issuing a prevention prescription, a regulatory anchor that supports continued demand for annual heartworm diagnostics. Needle-free sampling would substantially simplify compliance for annual testing, potentially expanding testing penetration among owners deterred by clinic visit cost and logistics, and extending commercial reach for direct-to-consumer veterinary diagnostic models. Validation is positioned as the gating milestone for commercial launch.

The commercial signal is a maturing US direct-to-consumer veterinary diagnostics category where at-home sampling and needle-free collection could reshape annual heartworm testing economics, particularly across the growing cohort of owners engaging telehealth-based preventive prescribing. Validation thresholds and state regulatory alignment anchor near-term commercial timing. Expect sustained direct-to-consumer veterinary diagnostics expansion and continued investment in needle-free sampling through 2027.
