Argonne and Aclara Propel U.S. Critical Materials with AI Partnership

1st April 2026

In a groundbreaking public-private collaboration, Argonne National Laboratory and Aclara Resources are advancing the U.S. critical materials supply chain. By integrating AI-driven technologies, the partnership aims to enhance domestic production, focusing on rare earth elements vital for advanced manufacturing and energy solutions.

As the United States strives to modernize its infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities, securing a stable supply of rare earth elements has become critical. With many of these elements sourced from overseas, U.S. manufacturers face potential supply chain disruptions. The collaboration between Argonne, a leader in research and innovation, and Aclara Resources is a strategic move to mitigate these risks. By employing AI-driven digital twin technologies, they aim to optimize the separation processes in Aclara’s pilot plant, alongside Virginia Tech’s expertise. This initiative supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s strategy of leveraging public-private partnerships to bring new technologies from research to market swiftly, thereby reinforcing the domestic supply chain’s robustness.

Argonne and Aclara’s partnership represents a significant leap toward establishing a reliable, U.S.-based supply chain for critical materials. With a planned heavy rare earth separation facility in Louisiana set to commence by 2028, this collaboration promises a future of improved efficiency and stability in critical materials production, ensuring the U.S. remains competitive in the global market.
