Dentsply Sirona, Siemens Clear First Dental MRI with FDA

28th October 2026

Dentsply Sirona and Siemens Healthineers have received FDA clearance for MAGNETOM Free.Max Dental Edition, the first-ever dental-dedicated MRI system (ddMRI) for advanced soft-tissue diagnostics. Announced in March 2026, the clearance opens new commercial territory across the premium dental imaging category, challenging incumbent CBCT economics with an ionising radiation-free alternative that targets hospitals, large clinics and university programmes.

The MAGNETOM Free.Max Dental Edition is designed for dentomaxillofacial diagnostics with a dental-specific field of view enabled by a dedicated dental coil and software, excluding brain tissue from the image. Average workflow time is under 20 minutes. The system complements intraoral, panoramic and CBCT imaging where soft-tissue characterisation matters. A 2025 Clinical Evaluation Report validated performance across endodontics, periodontics, TMJ, tooth extraction and orthodontics, including differentiating active inflammation from healthy and scar tissue, non-invasive assessment of tooth pulp vitality alongside chairside testing, and visualising teeth position relative to neighbouring teeth and nerves.

Dan Scavilla, President and CEO of Dentsply Sirona, framed the launch as the industry’s first dental-dedicated MRI. Andreas Schneck, Head of Magnetic Resonance at Siemens Healthineers, positioned the system around expanding MRI clinical impact. Professor Don Tyndall (University of North Carolina) reviewed trial findings. The platform sharpens Dentsply Sirona’s premium imaging positioning (XRAY on Nasdaq) and extends Siemens Healthineers’ broader dental imaging play beyond its general diagnostic imaging portfolio. The clearance intensifies competitive pressure across the dental imaging market, challenging CBCT incumbents Planmeca (ProMax 3D, Viso), Carestream Dental (CS 8100, CS 9600), KaVo Imaging (OP 3D), Vatech (Green CT) and J.Morita (3D Accuitomo), while opening upgrade conversations across large US dental clinics, universities and hospital-based oral surgery practices.

The commercial signal is a category-defining dental imaging launch where ionising-radiation-free soft-tissue MRI opens upgrade territory beyond CBCT economics, particularly across endodontics, periodontics and TMJ workflows. Hospital and university adoption anchors early access channels. Expect Dentsply Sirona, Siemens Healthineers, Planmeca, Carestream Dental, KaVo Imaging, Vatech and J.Morita to sharpen their dental imaging positioning through 2027.
