FDA Approves Zoetis Convenia RTU for Medium, Large Dogs
Zoetis has received FDA approval for Convenia RTU for Dogs (cefovecin injectable suspension), a ready-to-use formulation of the long-established canine antibiotic. Announced on 21 October 2026, the approval expands single-injection, in-clinic antimicrobial access for medium and large dogs ahead of internal estimates. The ready-to-use format eliminates reconstitution and supports Zoetis’ positioning of Convenia as a 15-year blockbuster franchise within its US companion animal portfolio.
Convenia (cefovecin sodium) was originally approved by the FDA in April 2008 as a long-acting cephalosporin antibiotic for bacterial skin infections in dogs and cats, with therapeutic concentrations maintained for approximately 7 days following a single subcutaneous injection. The new ready-to-use (RTU) formulation eliminates the lyophilised reconstitution step required with the original product, with the antibiotic delivered in a single, concentrated in-clinic injection. This administration pathway ensures 100% treatment compliance, removes owner-administration variability and is particularly cost-effective for medium and large dogs, who previously required higher dose volumes under the standard formulation.
Zoetis positioned the approval as received ahead of internal estimates and anticipated to contribute to Convenia’s 15-year blockbuster franchise status. The expanded canine access extends Zoetis’ commercial positioning across the US companion animal antibiotics market, intensifying competitive pressure against Elanco (Clavaseptin, Rilexine), MSD Animal Health, Boehringer Ingelheim, Virbac and Vetoquinol (Zeniquin). The approval also sharpens Zoetis’ defensive position against generic cefovecin competition from Qilu Animal Health Products, which received FDA ANADA approval in June 2025. The in-clinic administration model aligns with ongoing antimicrobial stewardship pressure favouring veterinarian-controlled dispensing.
The commercial signal is a maturing US companion animal antibiotics category where ready-to-use formulations, in-clinic compliance economics and generic entrant pressure converge on substantial lifecycle extension opportunity for established blockbuster brands. Antimicrobial stewardship favours veterinarian-administered injectables. Expect Elanco, MSD Animal Health, Boehringer Ingelheim, Virbac, Vetoquinol and generic cefovecin specialists to sharpen their US canine antibiotic positioning through 2027.
