MSD Data: 69.5% of UK Calves Show Coronavirus Antibodies

MSD Animal Health has released new UK data underlining the importance of protecting calves against bovine coronavirus as part of a wider strategy to prevent bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Reported on 10 September 2026 from analysis of 1,732 calves screened between 2022 and 2026, 69.5% carried bovine coronavirus antibodies, with strong co-infection patterns pointing to a broader commercial opportunity across UK cattle vaccination.

Coronavirus-positive groups were significantly more likely to show evidence of other respiratory pathogens, particularly bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (PI3) and Mannheimia haemolytica. Each additional PI3-positive calf was associated with an approximately 37% increase in the odds of the group being coronavirus-positive. MSD Animal Health veterinary adviser Dr Kat Baxter-Smith framed the findings as reinforcing that BRD is rarely caused by a single pathogen, highlighting the need for a proactive, whole-farm approach to respiratory disease prevention. Even small lung lesions carry meaningful economic impact, with calves showing 1-2cm lesions having average daily gains 96-138g lower than those without lesions.
