NYU Abu Dhabi Debuts Seed-Sized Injectable Nerve Device
Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, have developed a seed-sized injectable wireless bioelectronic device for peripheral nerve stimulation, potentially transforming treatment approaches for chronic pain and movement disorders. Published in Science Advances on 10 October 2026, the leadless, battery-free device can be delivered through a standard needle rather than surgically implanted, opening substantial new commercial territory across the growing neuromodulation and non-opioid chronic pain market.
Once injected and positioned close to a specific nerve, the device delivers carefully controlled electrical signals that alter nerve activity, with power supplied wirelessly from outside the body. Doctors can locate and monitor placement using standard ultrasound and CT imaging, and the implant provides programmable electrical stimulation adjustable to individual patient needs. Preclinical testing demonstrated successful activation of nerves in vivo. Professor Khalil Ramadi, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at NYU Abu Dhabi (senior author), positioned the technology as representing a shift in treating nerve-related conditions, enabling simpler, safer and more accessible therapies.
First author Dr Mohamed Elsherif positioned the technology as bridging the gap between non-invasive therapies and traditional implants. The approach challenges established neuromodulation incumbents Medtronic (Interstim, DBS, spinal cord stimulators), Boston Scientific (Precision SCS, Vercise DBS), Abbott (NeuroSphere, Proclaim), Nevro (Senza SCS), LivaNova (VNS Therapy) and electroCore (gammaCore). The seed-sized injectable form factor also places the device alongside leadless and miniaturised neural interface specialists Nalu Medical, Setpoint Medical and Precision Neuroscience, while opening competitive positioning against pharmaceutical non-opioid chronic pain franchises including Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Journavx).
The commercial signal is a differentiated injectable bioelectronics category where miniaturisation, battery-free wireless operation and standard imaging-guided placement challenge both surgically implanted neuromodulation infrastructure and emerging non-opioid chronic pain pharmaceuticals. Clinical translation remains a key milestone. Expect Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Abbott, Nevro, LivaNova, Nalu Medical, Setpoint Medical and Vertex Pharmaceuticals to monitor injectable neuromodulation developments through 2027 and 2028.
